Texas Cattlewomen experienced a weekend full of learning, bonding and insight during the third official Women in Ranching workshop at NRS, March 22nd-24th, 2019.
“Women are a very important part of agriculture,” said Debbie Gill, Texas Cattlewomen President. “Since more women are entering the ranching business, the culture of the industry is changing.”
The Women in Ranching workshops are designed by Texas Cattlewomen to educate and inform women who are new to farming, ranching and agriculture. Workshop presenters are primarily women who are experienced in the relative ranching topics being demonstrated and taught.
Texas Cattlewomen specifically focuses on the importance of the beef industry in Texas and the U.S. The organization is vitally interested in protecting the industry and informing others about the economic contributions of cattle ranching. Currently, there are 14 regional chapters established across Texas.
During the weekend, participants learned about a wide range of topics relative to cattle ranching. Friday was spent with a focus on riding. Presenters and participants were saddled up in the arena for a close-knit, hands-on learning experience. Participants were educated on safety, horsemanship, bitting, working a gate, common challenges that arise with horse handling and working a rope while on a horse.
Saturday was all about cattle. Debbie’s husband, Dr. Ron Gill of the Texas AgriLife Extension, demonstrated cattle handling to the group. Later in the day, topics such as cattle health, vaccinations, chute-side manners and live animal examination were covered.
Sunday wrapped up the workshop with cowboy church and a topic presentation about marketing options with Kimberly Irwin of the Decatur Livestock Market followed by a Q&A panel.
“Our goal is to create an environment where women feel comfortable asking questions,” Debbie said. “We want them to leave here with a new level of confidence.”
